Eugene Skourtes, DMD co-founded the very first Willamette Dental location in Portland, OR, focused on preventative care and long-term oral health instead of the traditional fee-for-service model.

Throughout the 70s and into the early 80s, Willamette Dental contracted with Dentacare, one of the region’s earliest coordinated dental care programs. In 1983, Willamette Dental offered patients their own pre-paid dental plans for the first time.

In 1993, we expanded our insurance and patient care sites into Washington, followed by Idaho in 1999. After a decade of growth, we proudly served patients in more than 50 dental offices throughout the PNW.

In 2009, we were listed in Portland Business Journal’s Top 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies in Oregon. This was a period of significant membership growth, ending the decade with more than 450K insurance members.

This steady growth and success allowed us to reinvest in our communities and our practice. In 2011, we founded The Skourtes Institute, which focuses on advancements in oral health through research, scholarship, training, and community building.

Willamette Dental continued to make upgrades to improve experiences for both patients and providers. We upgraded all offices to electronic dental records, digital radiography, and intraoral digital scanners. We began offering individual and family plans and partnered with Blue Cross of Idaho and Moda Health in Oregon to expand coverage. We wanted to share our exceptional patient experience, so we implemented public transparency of unfiltered patient ratings and reviews on our website.

We are a fully integrated dental care organization with highly skilled providers supported by our own insurance products that are comprehensive and simplified for our members. This progressive approach continues what Dr. Skourtes initially set out to do at the very beginning – focus on preventive care and long-term oral health.
